King Charles Coronation Results in a Surge in Themed Scam Sites

The once-in-a-lifetime royal occurrence sparked countless websites designed to steal personal information and credit card details, causing security experts to issue warnings.

The changing of power in the U.K. royal family is something we may only see once or perhaps twice in our lives. It’s certainly a major focus for U.K. residents, to those living in U.K. territories, and to people around the world.

It’s also an opportunity for scammers to take advantage of the goodwill of those fascinated by the coronation, spinning up scam websites that provide information about the coronation, “sell” themed items as keepsakes, and even purport to sell tickets to the event itself.

According to security experts at Kaspersky in an article at Computer Weekly, they found “clear evidence that scammers are ramping up their efforts to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration to deceive people and make a quick profit.”

Sites like the one below were created specifically to take advantage of the event.

These scams should make it clear that when emotions and interest are high of an individual or employee in a particular event or current topic of the day, the opportunity exists for scammers to take advantage of the situation. So, it’s important to remain extra vigilant with security awareness training – when events like the coronation come around.

    Computer Weekly has the story.
