Phishing Kits and Phishing-as-a-Service Responsible for Over 300,000 URLs Used in Phishing Attacks

Phishing Kits and Phishing as a Service

Lowering the barrier to market even more, this new Phishing as a Service (PhaaS) spotted by Microsoft puts quality phishing templates and sites into the hands of any would-be cyber attacker.

One of the most critical parts of a phishing campaign – especially those intent on capturing credentials – is the website the potential victim is taken to. Traditionally, cybercriminal groups would need to be adept in website design to ensure the desired malicious outcome.

But, as “crime as a service” has continued to expand, it’s no surprise to hear that the Microsoft 365 Defender Threat Intelligence Team has spotted a set of phishing campaigns that all seem to utilize the phishing as a service operator; the group responsible has been referred to as BulletProfitLink or Anthrax with over 300K subdomains in use from a single campaign alone.

These PhaaS providers offer complete malicious websites that include registration and sign-in pages, phishing templates, as well as hosting and support. If you’ve been paying attention to the evolution of cybercrime, this suddenly becomes a reasonable next step that is logical.

The result of such services is the wide availability of credible-looking websites designed to trick users out of credentials, credit card information, and other personal data. It becomes very important that user undergo continual Security Awareness Training to help them understand the need for constant vigilance when interacting with email.

You should expect these “as-a-service” types of solutions increase in count and quality, making the need for a proactive and preventative stance that much more important.
